Bunions Treatment in Columbia, SC

What are Bunions?

Bunions are foot conditions that develop when the joint at the base of your big toe grows large and sticks out. This happens when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place, making the tip of your big toe pull toward the smaller toes. This then causes the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out, creating a bumpy appearance on the side of your foot.

Bunions can be painful and can make walking difficult. They are more common in women and can develop as a result of wearing tight or narrow shoes, foot injuries, or inherited foot types.

Symptoms of Bunions

Bunion symptoms can be quite noticeable and may include the following:

  • A bulging bump on the outside of your foot, at the base of your big toe
  • Swelling, redness, or soreness around the big toe joint
  • Corns or calluses that develop where the first and second toes overlap
  • Persistent or intermittent pain in your big toe or foot
  • Restricted movement of your big toe if your bunion has progressed to arthritis

These symptoms can cause discomfort, making it challenging to wear shoes or walk for long distances.

What Causes Bunions?

Bunions are often caused by a combination of several factors, including:

  • Genetics – Bunions can run in families, due to inherited foot shape and structure
  • Footwear – Wearing tight, narrow shoes, or high heels can push your toes together and may cause bunions over time. This is often why bunions are more common in women
  • Foot stress or injuries – Trauma or injuries to the foot can lead to bunion development
  • Arthritis – Certain types of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis, can contribute to bunion formation

Despite these factors, not everyone with these risk factors will develop bunions. The nature of bunions is such that multiple causes often interact, making it important to take preventive measures if you’re at risk.

Treatment Options for Bunions

Bunions can often be managed with conservative treatments, especially when addressed early. Here are some common treatments options:

  • Lifestyle changes – This can include wearing wider, comfortable shoes and using bunion pads in your footwear to alleviate pressure
  • Pain relief medications – Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation
  • Physical therapy Stretching and strengthening exercises can help maintain joint mobility and reduce discomfort
  • Custom orthotics – Shoe inserts can help distribute pressure evenly when you move your feet, reducing symptoms and preventing your bunion from getting worse
  • Surgery – If your bunion causes significant pain and interferes with your daily activities, and conservative treatments haven’t helped, your doctor might recommend foot surgery to realign your toe and relieve pain

Remember, it’s always best to consult with an orthopedic specialist at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery to choose the most effective treatment plan tailored for your specific needs.
